Start off by looking for clubs in your local listings magazine or newspaper. Rule out any that you don’t like the look of, and then contact the remaining clubs to see if you can arrange a visit. If you don’t have much spare money at the moment, it may be wise to choose a club which doesn’t require lots of specialist equipment. Find out who the club secretary is and note down their contact details, as they will be able to provide you with information regarding any fees, opening times, and match schedules. Most sporting clubs hold regular social events, so see if you can get an invite to one before you decide to part with your money and purchase full membership.

You also need to consider the reasons as to why you want to join a sporting club. If you are joining purely for the physical exercise, you will need to check out the club’s facilities and sporting reputation in the area. You may have ideas of joining a team at the club which competes against other sides, so it is wise to know what the standard of expected play is at the level which you want to compete before you sign up. However, if you are joining for more leisurely reasons, it is more important to figure out what the club’s social scene is like. Most sports teams offer free initial training sessions and tours around their facilities, so that potential members can decide whether they like the atmosphere at the club before they have to pay any money.
